WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic – Daniel Brits Wins

After 4 days of green felt action, the WPT’s Emperors Palace Poker Classic played down to its winner, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The winner was not the start of the day chip leader - Eugen du Plessis - neither the defending champion, Germany’s Dominik Nitsche. The one who walked away with the top prize at the end of the day was Daniel Brits, who was rewarded with $132.1k for his efforts.
The first victim of the last day of action was Ronit Chamani, who fell in a 3-way hand. Rob Fenner and Wesley Wiegand were the two other players involved in the said hand. Fenner started out with the worst odds, but by the time the river card fell, he had a flush and he tripled up, leaving Wiegand crippled and Chamani on the rail. Chamani picked up $26.5k for his 6th place.
Predictably, Wiegand was the next player to bite the dust: he was bounced in 5th place by Brits on the very next hand. Wiegand’s reward was $33.1k.
Dominik Nitsche’s title defense hopes went up in smoke when he hit the rail in 4th place. Last year’s winner of the same
poker tournament was bounced by Brits, after the latter’s A,Qo got the better of his A,Jo in what turned out to be his final hand. Nitsche’s reward was $44.1k.
3-handed action dragged on for a while, before Rob Fenner committed the last of his chips on a 10h,9h against du Plessis’ 6h,7h, on a board which gave both players a flush draw. The flush failed to materialize and therefore it was du Plessis’ inferior hand which triumphed thanks to a low pair he’d made.
Fenner’s 3rd place reward was $59.6k.
The heads-up stage of the poker tournament lasted for 3 hours, and in the end, Brits emerged with the win, his Q,8o getting the better of his opponent’s Jd, 7d in the final hand of the event.
