WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic – Day 1B Report

The second day 1 flight of the WPT’s Emperor Poker Classic, currently underway in Johannesburg, South Africa, saw a total of 91 buy-ins go into the prize-pool, in the wake of Day 1A’s 85-entry yield. The numbers are at least a little deceiving though, given that unlimited re-buys are available until the end of the first level of action on Day 2. With that in mind, it’s not unrealistic to expect to see some more buy-ins land in the middle before the line is drawn.
A total of six levels of action went into the second day 1 flight, at the end of which 70 players remained in the running, with Eugene Du Plessis holding the largest stack. Du Plessis amassed a stack of 142.1k chips, being the only player who climbed over the 100k mark. Edward Pastoll came in second, having 99.7k chips bagged at the end of the day.
One of the players who drew a lot of press attention on Day 1B was Jerome Bradpiece, who had finished last year’s event in second place. Bradpiece had a few ups and downs, but he eventually made the cut, albeit on a not particularly impressive stack of 11.8k chips.
Du Plessis had a superb run all through the day. He piled up the chips, knocking out players left and right, among them Raymond Rahme. Rahme, who had already bought in and busted out twice on the first Day 1 flight of the
poker tournament, was sent packing again when he pushed all-in on a board of J,10,2,7, and got called by Du Plessis who had pocket Ks for the set. He mucked and later it turned out that he had pocket 6s.
Rupert Elder and Leo Margets made the cut as well, together with Hugh Todd and Matt Lawrence.
