WPT Emperors Palace Poker Classic – Day 2 Report

The second day of the WPT’s Emperors Palace Poker Classic was the scene of some pretty interesting developments: as the field played down to the final 27, Germany’s Dominik Nitsche emerged with the chip lead. The interesting thing about Nitsche is that he is the one who won this same event last year and that now he’s managed to maneuver himself into the perfect position for a title defense. At the end of day 2, the German had a stack of 485k chips bagged. Matt Lawrence had a good day too: he finished second with 449k chips to his name. Start of the day chip leader Eugene Du Plessis used his large stack well through the day and when the line was drawn he was third, with 398k chips.
Tom Koral and Jason Strauss finished with large stacks as well.

Most of Nitsche’s chips came during the 15th level of action, from Benjamin Cole. Cole executed a check-raise move before the flop, which saw Nitsche retaliate. Cole eventually just made the call, calming the war in order for the three community cards to hit the board. The flop was K,Q,4 all spade, and Nitsche was the one who re-ignited the action. Cole yet again called to see the 3s hit the turn. That turned out to be a scare-card for Nitsche who slowed down, checking and then calling Cole’s bet. The 9d fell on the river and both players checked (Nitsche tried to set another trap, but Cole must’ve caught on). It then turned out Nitsche had been playing the board perfectly as he tabled an As, 10x for the nut flush.

The end of the day saw the money bubble of the poker tournament burst. The last player to go home empty-handed was Greg Ronaldson, whose three queens fell to an opponent’s straight for the bust.
