WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic – Day 2 Report

The second day of the WPT’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic offered players the possibility to register late. 48 players took advantage of late registration, among them Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Jason Mercier, Eli Elezra and Ben Lamb. The reason these players didn’t show up for Day 1 was that they played at Bobby’s Room instead. They all took the Day 2 hurdle in stride, surviving on decent stacks with the exception of Ben Lamb, who bit the dust at the hands of Blake Kelso.
Lamb wasn’t the only name player to meet his
poker tournament demise though: Daniel Negreanu followed him to the rail, together with Barry Greenstein, Hoyt Corkins, Faraz Jaka and Jennifer Harman. 148 players survived the second day of action.
The end of the day chip lead went to Grant Lang of the US, who managed to amass 382k chips.
Lang got off to a lightning fast start, taking down a massive pot from Vanessa Selbst, the start of the day chip leader, in the very last hand of the day. Other players who did well and finished near the top of the chip counts were Soy Nguyen and Scott Clements.
The one responsible for the most interesting hand of the day was Clements who took a massive pot from Chris Klodnicki to make his way up the chip counts. The hand in question saw Clements, John Smith, Klodnicki and Luis Velador go to the flop, which fell 9,9,8. Clements fired out a bet and Klodnicki raised him. After a couple of back and forth bets, the two ended up pushing everything into the middle. Clements then tabled 9,10 for the seemingly dominating set of 9s. Klodnicki replied by unveiling a pair of 8s for the boat. The turn seemed to seal the deal: it was another 8 and Klodnicki’s grasp on the pot seemed secure. The 9 on the river gave Clements quad 9s though and Klodnicki was left crippled.
He was eliminated later in the day.
