WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic – Day 3 Report

Thursday marked the 3rd day of the WPT’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic, and the big guns truly did come out to play. Antonio Esfandiari, the winner of the biggest ever live
poker tournament, the Big One for One Drop, was the one who finished the day with the largest sack of chips.
Freddy Deeb finished second for the day, but his stack of 633k chips was quite a bit shorter than Esfandiari’s 918.5k. Given the pro-heavy nature of the starting field, which was a direct result of the massive buy-in, the top 10 at the end of day 3 looked a lot like a celebrity invitational. Besides the above said two players, Eddy Sabat, Brian Rast, Noah Schwartz, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Andrew Lichtenberger made the top of the pops too.
Esfandiari started the day with a decent stack and he did well, up until a point when he happened upon a massive pot at the end of a hand against Shawn Cunix. The hand was a 4-way one when the flop fell. The K,9,2 prompted a bunch of raises and re-raises, Esfandiari had a set of Ks, and luckily for him, Cunix had a set too, of deuces, for the perfect hand situation. The turn and the river didn’t change anything and Cunix was sent to the rail while Esfandiari soared to the top of the chip counts.
Cunix wasn’t the only “name” competitor to hit the rail: he joined a rather illustrious crew upon his elimination, which included Michael Mizrachi, Joe Hachem, Scotty Nguyen, Matt Giannetti and JC Tran.
While some were busy walking towards the sidelines, others kept adding to their stacks. Jason Somerville, Chino Rheem and Tony Dunst all finished with healthy stacks. 60 players were left in contention at the end of the day.
