WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic – Day 4 Report

The 4th day of the WPT’s Five Diamond World Poker Classic is in the books and the final table still hasn’t been reached. 49 players showed up at the tables at the beginning of the day, with the objective of playing down to the final table. Unfortunately, there were still 13 of them left in contention when the day was called, thus the final table remained outside of their grasp. Soi Nguyen was the one who clinched the chip lead at the end of the day. He had 3.1 million chips bagged.
Andrew Lichtenberger played extremely well too: he managed to amass 2.1 million chips, enough for second place. Given the extremely competitive nature of the initial starting field, it didn’t come as a surprise for anyone that the 13 survivors were - almost without exception - high profile poker players. Antonio Esfandiari survived the day, together with Vanessa Selbst, David Williams and William Reynolds.

Nguyen couldn’t make a wrong move on day 4. He threw his chips around, and every time he did that, he would wind up winning some more. The hand that thrust him over the 3 million chip mark saw him push all-in on a flop of J,8,7 rainbow, holding A,J for the top pair top kicker. Brent Roberts made the call, tabling pocket Kings. The 6c fell on the turn followed by the Jc on the river to give the pot to Nguyen against all the odds.
Esfandiari continued his methodical grinding: he eliminated Ty Reiman in 17th place, after he flopped a set of Aces against the latter’s pair of 2s. The turn did give Reiman a 4-card spade flush, but the 9d on the river dashed his hopes for good.
Dwyte Pilgrim, Tony Dunst, Matt Glantz, Jonathan Little and Allen Cunningham were all eliminated on Day 4.
Matt Marafioti and Blake Kelso also saw their poker tournament lives expire towards the end of the day.
