WPT Foxwoods World Poker Final – Day 1 Report

The WPT’s Foxwoods World Poker Final has quite a history to look back on: among the winners of past seasons, there’s not a single name that’s not a well-known one in poker circles.
Having reached its 10th season, the $10k buy-in event drew a starting field of 185 players on Thursday. The field was once again extremely pro-heavy and many of the event’s past champions were in the lineup as well. The peculiarity of the event is that registration remains open after the first day wraps up, all the way to the start of the second day. What that basically means is that the starting field will certainly be larger than 185.
Dwyte Pilgrim was one of the ‘name’ players who survived the day. David Williams, Erik Seidel and Lee Markholt played as well and they all managed to get past the day 1 hurdle too.
The action was fast and crazy, giving birth to some pretty rare hands and situations. Such a hand was Greg Lang’s Qh, Jh, which was hit dead-on by a flop of Ah, Kh, 10h for – that’s right – a Royal Flush. Such an absolute monster of a hand should’ve brought down the house for Lang, unfortunately it turned out to be worth exactly zilch: Lang’s opponent checked the flop and then when Lang got to building up the pot a little, he just got out of the way.
Another interesting hand was one which saw no fewer than 4 limpers. After some give and take, the two players who were left in the hand showed down a full house and quads.
Jason Somerville, John Cernuto and Jonathan Aguiar played too. Unfortunately, none of them made the cut.
Thomas Schreiber finished the day with the largest stack: he bagged 104k chips. James Frangoulidis finished second with a stack of 102.4k. Andy Frankenberger and Kathy Liebert made the top 5 too.
