WPT Grand Prix de Paris – Day 2 Report

There was a lot of high profile live poker tournament action taking place on Sunday but the WPT’s Grand Prix de Paris stood out nonetheless, putting its second day of action into the books. Day 3 made the numbers game behind the scenes clear, as registration wrapped up upon its start. A total of 187 buy-ins went into the prize-pool, of which 65 remained in action.
Given that only 21 places are paid, there’s still a ways to go before the money bubble is reached. Interestingly enough, the player who finished Day 2 with the largest stack was none other than reigning champion Matt Salsberg, who finished with a stack of 212.6k, positioning himself perfectly for a possible title defense.
Start of the day chip leader Hicham Hilmi had a good day too: he ended up in second place with 200.7k chips to his name.
The end of the day top 10 was rife with local players, but quite a number of “name” players survived too, further down the chip counts. Marvin Rettenmaier was one of these players. Jason Koon and Bryn Kenney were among those who have had their tickets punched for Day 3 too.
Paul Volpe and Steve O’Dwyer saw their
poker tournament lives curbed early though. Another player whose event ended on Day 2 was Lee Markholt. Coming off a major win in the
WSOP Europe’s Main Event, Spain’s Adrian Mateos was among those sent packing early too.
The one who disposed of him was none other than Marvin Rettenmaier. The hand which turned out to be the Spaniard’s last, saw the chips go into the middle on a flop of 10h,8c,3c. Rettenmaier had a Jc, 9c for a flush and a straight draw, against Mateos’ Ac,Qc. The turn and the river fell 7s, 3s respectively, giving Rettenmaier a straight and with it the pot.
