WPT Grand Prix de Paris – Matt Waxman Wins

The WPT’s Grand Prix de Paris event saw only 6 players belly up to the tables on its 5th day. The official final table was led by Byron Kaverman. At the end of the day though, it was American Matt Waxman pocketing the €512k top prize.
The first elimination of the day came about relatively fast: It took 27 hands for the first victim to bite the dust. Martin Jacobson started the final stretch as a short-stack and he shoved all-in on an Ad,Jd he’d picked up. Mikko Sundell was the one who called him and his J,J held up, eliminating Jacobson in 6th place.
Sundell then fell victim to the eventual winner, Waxman. The pot that led to Sundell’s crippling offered Waxman’s stack a huge boost, which would carry him through all the way to the top.
The hand in question saw Waxman flop a flush, while Sundell flopped a higher flush draw, which failed to fill up on the turn and the river. Sundell was left with barely a BB after that and he fell in the very next hand to Kaverman.
Kaverman was the next victim of the final table, eliminated by Fred Magen in 4th place. Kaverman was the one who shoved all-in holding Qh, 9h on a board of Kh,Qd,10d,Jh,7h. Magen made the call with A,7 for a Broadway straight. Magen’s joy wouldn’t last though. He was the next to fall at Waxman’s hands, thus setting up the heads-up stage. Magen shoved all-in holding Ks,Qs but Waxman had Ac, Kc. The board only brought a bunch of blanks and Magen was out.
The heads-up stage was a rather one-sided affair. Waxman began with a massive lead over Hugo Lemaire, and he wasted no time: he finished things in a mere three hands. The final hand of the tournament saw Waxman’s 9c, 8c hit a flush against Lemaire’s Q,8o. Lemaire picked up €311k for his efforts.
