WPT LA Poker Classic – Day 3 report

The LA Poker Classic’s third day featured a major milestone: the money bubble. Set for 63rd place, there would be quite a few players eliminated before the bubble would burst. A massive starting field of 236 bellied up to the tables of the Commerce Casino, each and every one of the players hoping to be the among the 63 who would get paid.
After about 13 hours of action, Jason DeWitt led the pack, the money bubble – which had burst when Hoyt Corkins was bounced – a distant memory.
The returning field was as pro heavy as ever: Mike Matusow, Freddy Deeb, Andrew Lichtenberger, Kara Scott and Shane Schleger were all there. Some of these guys must’ve been quite short-stacked as a surprisingly large number of them hit the rail during the very first level. Matusow and Deeb followed suit during the second level.
Matusow shoved all-in on a flop on which his K,10 had hit a pair of 10s. Jon Turner had pocket rockets and he pounced on the opportunity to grab some chips while sending the Mouth to the rail, which is exactly what happened, after neither the flop nor the river helped Matusow. Deeb fell victim to Tom Braband.
Phil Hellmuth was there too, and wouldn’t you know, he failed to advance in the tournament too, biting the dusty early as well. Once again, he was in decent shape when he shipped all his chips into the middle, with pocket 10s against Batista’s A,10. Lady Luck was probably already laughing at Hellmuth though when the hands were tabled. Sure enough, an A which fell on the turn sealed his fate and he joined his peers on the rail.

Hoyt Corkin’s elimination was probably the most significant of the day. He shoved all-in on the bubble, holding Q,Q against Mike Sowers’ pocket Ks. The board ran out blanks and the two-hour long bubble finally burst.
