WPT LA Poker Classic – Day 4 Report

The 4th day of the WPT’s LA Poker Classic saw 63 players return to the green felt in order to play down as close to the final table as possible. A total of 4 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which Toby Lewis emerged as the possessor of the largest stack. Lewis, who is now a member of Phil Ivey’s team of poker instructors, finished with 1.8 million chips to his name.
Several other “name” players made the top 10 as well. Paul Volpe for instance finished 3rd, with 1.56 million chips, and Jeremy Ausmus, the start of the day chip leader, finished in 6th place with a little over one million chips.
The day kicked off on the right foot in the sense that players began heading to the rail in droves almost as soon as things got going. Dani Stern was the first player to bite the dust: he took advantage of his position in the cut-off and got all his chips into the middle on pocket 8s. He got called by Marios Savvides, who had pocket 9s. The board fell all blanks and Stern was done for the day.

The pot he picked up did help Savvides make some headway, but eventually he too was eliminated in 37th place.
As the action heated up, the pace of the eliminations sped up even more. Carlos Mortensen and Phil Laak were both among those who lost their poker tournament lives. Ryan Eriquezzo and Dan Shak were both sent to the rail too, together with Joe Hachem and Sam Razavi. Hachem’s elimination was a rather peculiar one: his A,Ko was up against Garret Greer’s A,Ko, but the latter made a flush to score the upset elimination.
