18 players returned to the Commerce Casino on Day 5 of the WPT’s LA Poker Classic. All eyes were on Carlos Mortensen, the only 3-time WPT winner left in contention. Would he score his 4th title here? He certainly did his best to advance his cause, finishing day 5 with the largest stack of chips. The goal for the day was for the field to play down to the televised final table, which it did indeed.
There were other WPT winners in the day 5 field too. Vivek Rajkumar, the start of the day chip leader was one of them. He did make it through too, and he will be starting the final stretch of the event from second position, his 5.1 million chip stack only marginally shorter than Mortensen’s leading 5.2 million one.
The other players to make it to the 6-handed final table were Amir Lehavot, Steve Gross, Darryll Fish and Gregory Brooks.
The first victim of the day was Kathy Liebert, who shoved all-in on A,10 only to be called by Darryll Fish who had pocket Js. No help came for Liebert and she was bounced, but she still picked up more than $50k for her efforts.
Jason Senti was another early victim. He got his last chips into the middle holding pocket Qs against Brooks’ K,J. The K was the first card to hit the table and none of the later streets changed anything.
Mortensen’s path to the top of the leader board was paved with high-value trophies. He was responsible for the eliminations of Shannon Shorr and James Carroll. What’s more: he took out both these guys on the same hand, and what’s even more, he had Q,Q against Carroll’s K,K and Shorr’s pocket rockets. Mortensen made a flush on the turn to bounce both his opponents against all the odds.
David Baker became the final table bubble boy, eliminated by Vivek Rajkumar on a coin-flip.
