WPT Legends of Poker – Jordan Cristos Wins

The WPT’s Legends of Poker event is finally in the books and the winner is Jordan Cristos. Cristos bested Dan Heimiller heads-up, for the bragging rights and for the $613.3k top prize. On his way to the top, Cristos survived an initial starting field of 716 players. His final table run was by no means a walk in the park. Besides Heimiller, there were quite a few other high profile professionals standing between him and the title at the beginning of the final day. Phil Laak was there too, together with John Gordon.
The final day of the
poker tournament saw 6 players return to the tables, with their eyes on the top prize. Nobody was really in a hurry to put his tournament life onto the line, and for that reason, the first elimination only came about more than 4 hours after the kick-off. The bust occurred on a perfect hand which saw Laak and Gordon push all-in, holding pocket 10s and pocket Ks respectively.
The board gave Laak a 10-high straight on the river, and Gordon was crippled. A few hands later he was done: he picked up $85k.
The next victim was Laak himself, sent packing by Cristos. The chips went into the middle before the flop again as Cristos had pocket Qs against Laak’s A,8o. No help came for Laak this time and he picked up $109.3k for his 5th place.
Alex Masek followed Laak to the sidelines. He was sent to the rail by Ryan Goindoo, who couldn’t put the chips he picked up from Masek to good use either: he was the next one to be sent packing. Goindoo’s elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up stage of the event. Heimiller started out with the larger stack and he managed to extend his lead too, before dropping all his chips and having to settle for second.
