WPT London – Jake Cody wins

It was only fitting that the WPT’s inaugural London event be won by one of the home-boys. Jake Cody was the one in prime position to come through for the home crowd in London, and he did just that, defeating Nichlas Matsson heads-up for the title and the £270k+ top prize.
This win was Cody’s second, coming after an
EPT Deauville win and cementing his status as a talented and successful poker pro.
Jake Cody was pretty much the only “name” player at the final table, although chip leader and Team
PartyPoker member, Giovanni Safina was there too, with quite a bit of tournament experience under his belt. Despite his early advantage, Safina just couldn’t keep up the pace imposed by the other final table participants and he whittled away in 5th place.
Kristoffer Thorsson was another extremely serious final table contender. The Swede had won a major event as well ( the 2009 Master Classics of Poker), and he had a pretty solid extra incentive to do his absolute best in this one: a $1 million bonus from PartyPoker, half of which would’ve ended up in his pockets had he won the WPT London.
Eventually Thorsson hit the rail in 4th place, much to the dismay of the other PartyPoker qualifiers who would’ve gotten a share of the above mentioned bonus themselves.
Nichlas Matsson was the one who managed to hang on all the way to the heads-up stage of the
poker tournament. The final hand of the confrontation saw Matsson’s A,Q match wits with Cody’s pocket Qs. Nothing changed with the board though and Cody suddenly found himself in a position to possibly aim for a Triple Crown by adding a WSOP win to his EPT and WPT ones.
