WPT Malta – Day 1A Report

The WPT is in high gear these days, as barely does one of its events end in one corner of the world, another one kicks off elsewhere. Only a few hours after the sounds of green felt battle had settled at the Aviation Club de France, the action kicked off at the Casino at Portomaso. 64 players bellied up to the tables, having coughed up the €3.3k buy-in. At the end of the day, 34 players were still in contention.
The provisional chip leader is Casper Toft from Denmark, who managed to accumulate 123.6k chips.
Toft played well through the day, eliminating several players, among them Vladimir Geskenbein whose 10,9 fell to his pocket 8s. Given that organizers had expected a rather sizable turn-out for the first day 1 flight of the event, the 64-player starting field was slightly disappointing. Despite the fact that most of the WPT regulars hadn’t yet managed to fly over from Paris, there were more than a few ‘name’ players among the starters. Phil Hellmuth showed up fashionably late for the event. He bought in at the latest permitted time, and he proceeded to navigate through the treacherous waters of the day, finishing with a stack of 48.6k chips. Hellmuth’s feat was all the more impressive given how there was a man dressed in a run-down Spiderman costume, doing everything he could to distract the Brat. That man was none other than Andras Fekete, a poker player responsible for busting Hellmuth out of the same event a year ago. Fekete was bought into the
poker tournament by Tony G, who specifically asked him to pester Hellmuth as much as possible.
Dominik Nietsche was among those who made it to day 2, together with Jonathan Duhamel and Casey Kastle. Arnaud Mattern and Dan O’Brien made the cut too.
Eric Cajelais and Marvin Rettenmaier were both eliminated. Those eliminated on Day 1A will get the chance to re-buy on Day 1B.
