WPT Malta – Day 1B Report

The second day 1 flight of the WPT’s 2012 Malta event saw a star-studded starting field belly up to the tables of the spectacular Casino at Portomaso. 8 levels of action were squeezed into the day, at the end of which a new overall chip leader emerged: Jackson Genovesi. Genovesi didn’t have an easy day by any measure: he was seated at a tough table so he had had his work cut out for him from the very beginning.
The other players at his table were Kara Scott, Ronnie Bardah, Steve Van Zadelhoff and Fabrice Soulier. Apparently however, Genovesi is the kind of player who thrives under pressure: he made the most of his position, and he handled the pros at his table like a…well, a pro. There was one hand which was peculiarly telltale regarding the way Genovesi approached the Day 1B action: with the blinds at 150/300/25, a player made a raise and four others called before Kara Scott made another massive raise. The only two players who called this time around were Bardah and Genovesi.
The flop fell J,7,3 all spade and Scott fired out yet another bet. Bardah raised it and Genovesi tagged along. Scott made the call too. The turn fell 7c and the aggression continued. Bardah was forced to fold eventually, despite the fact that he had outs and a ton of chips already in the middle. It all came down to Scott vs Genovesi though, and Scott had pocket Qs against Genovesi’s As, 9s. The nut flush was obviously quite impossible to beat and the 6d on the river sealed the deal for good in Genovesi’s favor.
The end-result of the hand was an eliminated Scott and a new chip leader, who shot past the 100k chip mark with that pot.
Genovesi never looked back and he eventually finished the
poker tournament on top.
Other players who survived the day were Vanessa Selbst, Tony G, Alessio Isaia and Fabrice Souiler. Anton Wigg and Marvin Rettenmaier were among the survivors as well.
