WPT Malta – Day 2 Report

154 players made their way back to the tables on the second day of the WPT’s Malta event. With the money bubble set for 27th place, the field managed to play down to the final 30, as Cecilia Pescaglini clinched the chip lead. Pescaglini managed to build a monster-stack of 976 million chips, well ahead of all the other competitors. To put her advantage into perspective: second place man Marvin Rettenmaier had only 415k chips bagged.

Day 2 of the WPT’s Malta stop saw plenty of action and an impressive number of “name” players hitting the rail. Dominik Nitsche, David Vamplew, Tobias Reikenmeier and William Thorson all met their tournament demises during the day, together with Dragan Galic, Tommy Vedes and Steve O’Dwyer. By far the biggest name to find its way onto the day’s casualty-list was that of Phil Hellmuth. Hellmuth went out extremely fast, dropping all his chips in a couple of hands. It all happened during level 14 and it started out with Salvatore Bianco getting aggressive with Hellmuth. Hellmuth replied in similar fashion to see the A,7,3 drop on the flop. Both players checked the flop to see the 8c fall on the turn. Hellmuth made a move and Bianco called him to see the Kc fall on the river. Hellmuth made an almost pot-sized bet, which Bianco called with a 9,7. Hellmuth mucked his hand.

A few hands later, Hellmuth got into a tussle with Andras Fekete, who revealed his hand before Hellmuth called off all his chips. Regardless, Hellmuth didn’t fold, and the flop fell As,10h,6s. Hellmuth had A,9 so he was looking good against Fekete’s K,Js. The turn came 9s to give Hellmuth a two pair and his opponent a 4-card flush. The 10s on the river filled up Fekete’s flush and Hellmuth was done, again the victim of a runner-runner.
Isaac Haxton, Tony G and Tristan Clemencon all managed to survive though.
