WPT Malta – Day 2 Report

The second day of the WPT’s 2012 Malta event saw the start of the day chip leader, Jackson Genovesi maintain his lead. 6 levels of action were squeezed into the day, and at the end of it all, 26 players remained standing. Genovesi’s start of the day stack was a 147.5k one. He wasted no chances through the day though, so by the time the action was called, he was sitting behind 767.5 chips. Like during the previous day, Genovesi didn’t avoid confronting the big names at the tables. On day 2, the majority of his chips came from none other than Jonathan Duhamel, whom he eliminated in a rather interesting hand. The hand in question saw the two players engage in a raising battle before even a single card hit the board. It turned out Duhamel had pocket 10s against Genovesi’s pocket Js. Genovesi didn’t back down and he made the call, which was indeed the right decision and Duhamel bit the dust.

While many of the ‘name’ players found the going extremely difficult, Yorane Kerignard, the proud owner of a monstrous tournament record in European-hosted events, had quite a field-day. He finished with 522k chips. Ilan Boujenah moved on to day 3 as well: he finished the day with a stack of 297.5k chips.
Phil Hellmuth may have been pestered enough on Day 1A of the poker tournament by Tony G’s ‘hired’ man, but his demise came on Day 2 in a 3-way hand in which two players had shoved all-in before he decided to follow suit. He had an Ac,Kc against his opponents’ Qh, 10h and 7,7o and he failed to get there.
Tony G, Hellmuth’s big rival on the other hand, managed to survive the day, finishing with 117k chips to his name.
With the money bubble set for 22nd place, Day 3 will indeed be quite an important one in the economy of the event. The 26 players are set to play down to the 6-handed final table on Day 3.
