The 2011 WPT Malta was supposed to wrap up on its 4th day and that’s exactly what happened. The one walking away with the title and the $273.2k top prize was Matt Giannetti, a player who has managed to make the
2011 WSOP’s November Nine too. 8 players returned to the tables on the final day of action. Tristan Clemencon was the chip leader at the beginning of the day.
The first victim was Mats Carlsson who was eliminated in 8th place. Christofer Williamson followed him to the rail. Down to 6 players, Cecilia Pescaglini had the lead again followed by Matt Giannetti who had managed to claw his way into second place. Fabian Sartoris and Simon Trumper locked horns next. Trumper had pocket 5s against Sartoris’ K,9. The board helped neither of the two hands and Trumper managed to send Sartoris packing in 6th place. Clemencon and Pescaglini tangled next, in a classic coin-flip of a hand: Clemencon had pocket Ks against Pescaglini’s A,K. The A which landed on the river sealed Clemencon’s fate in 5th place.
Trumper’s joy over Sartoris’ elimination wouldn’t last. He was to be bounced next, by Pescaglini, whose A,8 got the better of Sartoris’ pocket 7s.
3-handed play lasted for quite a while: over 100 hands went by without a single bust-out. The hand which set the heads-up stage was a three way one. All three remaining players made the call: Bianchini had 4,3 against Gianetti’s pocket 6s and Pescaglini’s A,10 on a board of 7,5,2,5,2. Gianetti took the pot, setting up the heads-up stage against Pescaglini as Binchini bit the dust.
Heads-up play barely lasted a few hands. Both remaining players were eager to get their chips into the middle. It happened on a flop of 10c,8h,2c. Pescaglini had Q,10 for the top pair while Gianetti had a 9,7o for the open-ended straight draw. The Js fell on the turn, filling Gianetti’s draw and giving him the title.
