WPT Marrakech – Day 2 Report

Day 2 of the WPT’s Marrakech Main Event saw the field successfully play down to the final 50. The end of the day chip lead went to Ian Marmion of Ireland, but several high-profile professionals remained in contention. Marmion’s field-leading stack is 379k chips big and Jonathan Duhamel, of WSOP 2010 fame, has a stack of 364.5k. That positions Duhamel in 3rd place, but he’s not the only major force the survivors will still have to reckon with: France’s Bertrand Grospellier also managed to build a large stack, coming fresh off a kick boxing defeat, suffered at the hands (and feet) of fellow poker professional Lex Veldhuis.

The way ElkY and Duhamel built their stacks was radically different. The Frenchman toiled away all day long, building up his 293.5k monster bit by bit. Duhamel on the other hand jumped to the top of the pops in one move, after a massive pot he took off David Sacksick.
The said hand was quite inexplicable, considering the skills of the two players involved. Sacksick was the one who kicked off the preflop betting by firing out a bet, which then got three-bet by Duhamel. Sacksick then 4-bet all-in, and triumphantly tabled a K,7o, which was way behind Duhamel’s pocket Ks. The move hung a huge question mark over Sacksick’s ability to play Holdem.
With over 150k chips collected from that pot alone, Duhamel shot past the 300k mark, and with that much firepower at his disposal, he never looked back. The final two levels of the day were like a walk in the park for him, as he never lost sight of the leader.
Several pros survived the day, although none of them as handily as Duhamel and Grospellier. Arnaud Mattern finished behind a stack of 131k chips. Surinder Sunar and Sam El Sayed made the cut too.
Several other pros saw their tournament lives end on Day 2: Barny Boatman, Eugen Katchalov, Leo Margets and Davidi Kitai were all among the day 2 victims.
