WPT Merit Cyprus Classic – Day 1A Report

The first event of the WPT’s 11th season kicked off with a Day 1A flight consisting of 163 players. The Merit Cyprus Classic – which is what we’re talking about – is currently underway in Kyrenia, Cyprus. Around half the players in the Day 1A starting field whittled away by the end of the day, leaving Maxim Panyak in the lead. Panyak had indeed had an excellent Day 1A: he took down quite a number of massive pots through the day and he even managed to eliminate Andreas Krause on a classic coin-flip (pocket Qs vs A,K) on his way to the top.
He eventually closed the day with 255.8k chips.
Not many players managed to break past the 200k chip mark. As a matter of fact, save for Panyak, there was just one player who managed to pull off the feat: Atzlan Gil, who finished second behind a stack of 207.1k chips.
Also playing on the first day 1 flight of the $4.4k event was Gaelle Baumann, the deepest finishing female player of the
2012 WSOP Main Event. Baumann didn’t have a particularly good run this time. She ran out of steam after about 4 levels and she busted out without anything to show for her efforts. She will be able to rebuy on Sunday, so it’s not all lost for her just yet.
Tommy Vedes was the one who knocked her out, but he didn’t get to enjoy the fruits of that elimination long either: he was bounced a few hands later, but he too will probably take advantage of the re-buy opportunities.
Other ‘name’ players who failed to successfully navigate the treacherous waters of the
poker tournament were Chris Moorman, Zimnan Ziyard and Nicholas Chouity.
Marvin Rettenmaier on the other hand was much more successful: he finished with 122.2k chips. Eric Cajelais and Tony Judet made it through the day too. The second day 1 flight of the event is expected to see all the Mizrachi brothers belly up to the green felt.
