WPT Merit Cyprus – Day 3 Report

After a positively crazy Day 2, which saw around 70% of the field bite the dust over just 5 levels of action, Day 3 brought some sanity back into the
poker tournament, as the 31 survivors who returned to the tables still outside the money, adopted a much more cautious approach. With only 27 places paid, 4 more players needed to go before the sigh of relief could be breathed by the survivors. Due to the previous day’s carnage, on Day 4 only 4 levels were scheduled to be played. Alexey Rybin was the one who started the day with the largest stack, and at the end of the day, his was still the biggest stack. In fact, the Russian held the lead through the day, never allowing anyone close to the top spot.
He sent several players packing. Asaf Avci was one of those who fell victim to the Russian’s constant aggression and large-stack. Avci thought he had gotten lucky picking up pocket Js and he pushed all-in on them without much deliberation. Unfortunately for him, the Js proved to be the harbingers of the end of his tournament life, because Rybin had picked up pocket rockets in that same hand. Avci was therefore forced to exit in 15th place. Rybin went on to finish with more than 1.7 million chips to his name.
Kayhan Tugrul finished second with 1.2 million chips, more than 500k less than the leader. Sergey Rybachenko finished 3rd, followed by Andrei Nikonov in 4th.
Most of Rybachenko’s chips came late in the day, when he took a massive pot off Albert Daher in one of the last few hands of the day. Bernard Samaha, who had held the chip lead at the end of Day 1B was also among the Day 3 survivors.
