Day 1A of the WPT’s Montreal Main Event drew a starting field which has quite possibly exceeded the expectations of the organizers. 476 players bellied up to the tables of the Playground Poker Club, all aiming to earn a seat for the second day of the
poker tournament. When the action was called, 141 players were still standing. Patrick Leviever was the one who held the chip lead at the end of the first Day 1 flight.
The field was obviously loaded with professional players, among whom Antonio Esfandiari drew the most media attention. The Magician did pretty well: he survived and he even managed to build a rather healthy stack of 197.4k chips. Despite his overall success, the most noteworthy hand that Esfandiari played saw him come out on the losing end. In a three-handed pot, after a preflop betting and raising round, all active players checked the board down all the way to the river. Esfandiari and one of his opponents then tabled pocket Qs, but the player in the SB had a K,J and since the river card was a K, he ended up taking down the goods.
The “name” crowd had several of its members advance to day 2: Allan Kessler made the cut, together with Tristan Wade and Jason Koon. Koon finished with 84.4k chips to his name. Marc-Andre Ladouceur on the other hand finished with a 247.3k monster. Dominik Nitsche had a good run as well: he ended up with 158.2k chips.
Local player Matt Salsberg on the other hand, failed to survive: he pushed all-in during the last level of the day, against David Williams. Salsberg did make a flush, but Williams made a higher one for the win and the elimination.
Williams eventually finished with slightly more than 100k chips.
