WPT Montreal – Jonathan Roy Wins

The first ever edition of the WPT’s Montreal Main Event wrapped up on Tuesday, with two local players battling it out heads-up for the top prize. The eventual winner of the event was Jonathan Roy, who bested Pascal Lefrancois for the title. Roy ended up with a $755.6k haul topped off with a $25k seat in the WPT’s World Championship event, while the runner-up’s cut of the loot was $473.5k.
As soon as the official final table kicked off, two players pushed all-in. As a matter of fact, Peter Kaemmerlen and Jeff Gross shoved all-in on the very first hand of the final table. Kaemmerlen had pocket Js against the A,10 of Gross. The flop and the turn were quite meaningless for both players, but the A on the river changed everything, pushing Kaemmerlen out the door, $113.7k in his pocket. The hand also propelled Gross into the chip lead.
Railbirds didn’t have to wait too long for another round of fireworks to go off: on the 4th hand of the
poker tournament, two players were all-in again, Lafrancois and Sylvain Siebert. Lafrancois won the confrontation, chipping up nicely and pushing Siebert to the edge of extinction. A few hands later, despite a subsequent double-up, Siebert was sent to the rail for good.
He was followed to the payout queue by Gavin Smith, who had started the day as the official short-stack. Smith was bounced by Roy, who came from behind to dispose of him for good.
After a marathon 3-handed session, Jeff Gross got sent to the rail as well. The one responsible for his elimination was Roy again, who thus built a flimsy chip lead going into the heads-up stage. The crucial hand – which was the penultimate one – saw Lefrancois’ pocket 6s fall to Roy’s K,Qo.
