WPT South Africa – Dominik Nitsche Wins

With all the fuss surrounding the imminent start of the October Nine showdown, several relatively large-scale poker events went relatively “unnoticed” in the poker media last week. One of them was the WPT’s South Africa stop, a 5-day event which drew a starting field of 230 players, among them quite a few “name” professionals. On Friday, the poker tournament wrapped up, leaving Dominik Nitsche standing in the lime-light, his pocket $206.1k heavier than at the start of the green felt hostilities.
Day 1A of the event draw a field of 74 players, who successfully managed to play down to 34 by the end of the day. The eventual winner, Nitsche finished day 1A in the lead. Chris Moneymaker and Joe Cada played that day too, and they both failed to secure their Day 2 seats.

On day 1B, no fewer than 148 players took their seats at the tables. Liv Boeree played, together with McLean Karr and Melanie Weisner. Chris Moneymaker re-bought on Day 1B and he promptly busted out again. 80 of the day’s starters made it past the hurdle. On day 2 of the event, the field played down past the money bubble to the final 27. Jacques Londt was the official bubble-boy of the tournament.
Day 3 saw the official 6-handed final table set. By that stage, Nitsche had secured a firm grip on the chip lead.
The final day of the event saw the remaining survivors play down to a winner. The heads-up bout between Nitsche and Jerome Bradpiece was a rather lengthy one. The last hand of the event saw Nitsche’s Ac, 4c defeat Bradpiece’s Jc,10c. Bradpiece picked up $121.4k for his efforts. There weren’t any other 6-figure finishers in the poker tournament.
