The WPT’s Super High Roller Event, the entry to which cost players $100k apiece, was supposed to last 2 days. Eventually, it ended up running for 3, thanks to the prolonged heads-up battle that the final two participants, Erik Seidel and Erick Lindgren put on.
The second day of action was called when Seidel had a chip advantage of 7.12 million over Lindgren’s 4.48 million. As soon as things got going again on Day 3 though, Lingren found a way to quickly double up and in a few crucial hands, he turned the tables on Seidel, leaving him with a stack of only $2.5 million.
The hand which managed to turn the tide of action early on day 3, began with a few preflop give and takes, which put quite a few chips into the pot already as the K,6,3 all diamond fell on the flop. Seidel, who had a Jd, 2d in his pocket, slyly checked, giving up the initiative and springing the trap for Lingren, who walked into it holding K,6 for a two pair. The 6c on the river gave him a boat though and the lead in the hand. The 7d fell on the river, which managed to further erode the apparent strength of Seidel’s hand, but by that time, it didn’t really matter as the money had gone all-in on the flop already.
It only took Seidel a few hands to catch up with his opponent though, doubling up and vaulting back into contention. He picked up pocket Qs and got all his chips into the middle on them against Lindgren’s A,10. Lindgren did catch a pair of 10s on the board, but Seidel’s Qs held. That point proved to be the main turning point of the confrontation. From there on out, Seidel grabbed the chip lead again and built it up right till the final hand, when his Ah, 5h triumphed over Lindgren’s J,3o. The victor picked up $1,097,780 for his efforts.
