WPT Super High Rollers – Day 1 Report

A super high roller event is one featuring an out-of-this-world buy-in, thus restricting the starting field to some of the world’s best and wealthiest poker players, giving each of them excellent individual odds for winning. The WPT World Championships’ $100k Super high Roller event fits that description like a glove. Not even in WPT World Championship circles were there more than 29 players to cough up $100k for a single event buy-in.
The first day of action saw players wade through 10 blind levels. At the end of the day, Justin Bonomo had the chip lead, with a stack of 1.8 million chips.

Needless to say, the quality of the field that turned out for the event was truly outstanding. Yevgeniy Timoshenko was there, together with Tony G, Daniel Negreanu, Ashton Griffin, Erik Seidel, Erick Lindgren, Justin Smith and Tom Marchese. There wasn’t really anyone in the field who would not qualify as a “name” competitor.
Phil Ivey did not take part, his absence raising quite a few eyebrows and starting up quite a few conversations regarding his WSOP plans. Phil Galfond was one of the early victims of the day. He fell at Daniel Negreanu’s hands. He was followed to the rail by Tony G. Guoga hit the rail courtesy of Vivek Rajkumar when he shoved all-in holding A,Qo. Rajkumar made the call with A,K and both players proceeded to make a pair of As on the board. Rajkumar’s higher kicker prevailed though and Tony G was done for the event.

Using the momentum gathered through the above move, Rajkumar then proceeded to bounce Tom Marchese too. Marchese picked up a pair of 10s and decided to put his tournament life onto the line on them. Rajkumar called him with A,10 and proceeded to spike an A on the river to score the knock-out.
Bonomo doubled through Masa Kagawa early, and continued to add to his stack to soar to the top.
