WPT Venice – Day 1B Report

Phil Hellmuth is definitely no stranger to grand entrances, but one would think that by now he has learned his lesson: whenever he makes a grand entrance, he always seems to make a really quick exit afterwards. It’s like he pours everything he has into the entrance and he has nothing left in the tank for the actual poker.
The second day 1 flight of the WPT’s Venice Main Event saw him make one of the flashiest entrances of his career. He also made a characteristically quick exit, hitting the rail towards the end of the day. He actually took a gold gondola to the casino, showing up in classic Venetian garb, complete with a mask, a silver cane and an entourage of hot models. All the excitement surrounding his entrance meant that he only actually bellied up to the table during the penultimate level of play. He barely lasted a level: he got his chips into the middle with a top pair, low kicker and he was bounced promptly.

The player who finished the second day 1 flight of the poker tournament with the largest stack was Italy’s Fernando Cimaglia, who built a stack of 175k chips. Massimo Mosele finished second with 132.5k chips to his name. Of the “name” crowd, Ludovic Lacay made the deepest run: he finished 4th with a stack of 118k chips.
A total of 108 players bellied up to the tables of the Casino de Venezia Ca Vendramin Calergi, and of them only 59 were left standing by the end of the day. Galen Hall was among those sent to the rail, together with Giovanni Rizzo and Dario Sammartino. Guillaume Darcourt bit the dust as well, unlike Max Pescatori, Liv Boeree and Andrey Pateychuk, who all earned their Day 2 seats.
