15 players returned to the tables of the WPT’s Venice Main Event, looking to play down to the 6-handed final table. When the day was called, indeed, there were only 6 players left with
poker tournament hopes, the rest of them were on the rail, money in hand and hopes of “better luck next time” in their hearts.
Michele Caroli was the most successful player on Day 4: he finished with the chip lead, having amassed a little over 2 million chips.
Roberto Romanello was the only player at the beginning of Day 4 who already had a WPT championship under his belt. His day turned out to be a pretty short one: he was the first victim, falling to Michele Caroli as soon as the action kicked off.
On the very first hand of the day, Romanello got pushed out by Ronnie Bardah. On the next hand, Romanello attempted the same move, but he got called by Caroli. The hand turned out to be a classic coin-flip: Romanello’s pocket 9s were up against Caroli’s A,K. The river landed an Ace to send Romanello packing.
Wanny Piazza, the chip leader of the second day, was the next one to bite the dust. He was followed out the door by Bardah in 13th place. He fell to Edoardo Alescio, whose K,10o got the better of his K,Qo.
The field still had a few notables playing at that point, but that would soon change: after Fernando Cimaglia’s exit in 12th place, it was Arnaud Mattern’s turn to throw in the proverbial towel. The Frenchman was eliminated by Caroli, when his K,Qo proved to be no match for latter’s A,Ko.
Dario Rusconi was the next player to go, followed by Christopher Creus. Marvin Rettenmaier, the start of the day chip leader was bounced next.
Alejandro Sanches was eliminated too.
Despite the high rate of attrition, the final 6 remained rich in “name” players: Andrea Benelli and Steve O’Dwyer both made the final stretch, together with Alexander Dovzhenko.
