The Venice Grand Prix of the WPT’s 11th season kicked off the other day with its first day 1 flight in the Casino Di Venezia, the oldest such establishment in the world. The first day 1 flight didn’t exactly attract an impressive number of players: only 65 contenders bought in. A total of 8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which Stephen Behm emerged with the largest stack. Marvin Rettenmaier was right there at the top too: he finished second. Rettenmaier has been part of a small group of players this year who have surfaced in pretty much every major international event among the front-runners thus far. Indeed, Rettenmaier managed to build a stack of 115k chips, second only to Behm’s 188k one.
Besides Rettenmaier, there were other notables playing in the event as well: Mike Sexton for instance was there and he finished 3rd, with 99.9k chips. Kara Scott was among the “name” players too: she finished the day in 7th place, with 81.2k chips.
Rocco Palumbo made the top 10 as well: his 67k chips were enough to clinch him the 10th spot.
While some pros were enjoying some pretty outstanding runs, others were struggling. Andrey Pateychuk for instance got involved in a raising war with Guillaume Darcourt who ended up putting all his chips into the middle with a straight and a flush draw. Nothing materialized for the Frenchman though who thusly hit the rail. Pateychuk failed to advance in the
poker tournament too: he bit the dust later in the day.
Martin Staszko didn’t have a better Day 1 run either. He ran his pocket Ks into Marvin Rettenmaier’s pocket rockets in his last hand of the tournament.
Daniel Cates and Artem Litvonov both advanced to Day 2.
