WPT Vienna – Day 1A Report

The WPT’s Vienna Main Event kicked off on Tuesday with 163 players bellying up to the tables. The attrition rate was decent during the first Day 1 flight, and only 73 players were still in contention when the action was called. David Breitfuss was the one who clinched the preliminary chip lead.
Former WPT champions showed up en-masse for the first day 1 flight of the event. McLean Karr, Mike Watson, Victor Ramdin and Andrew Frankenberger were all there. The fact that they all busted out during the Day 1A hostilities is telltale proof to the quality of the action and the kind of pitched battles which defined the first leg of the event. Fortunately for those eliminated, re-buys are accepted on day 1B, so they’ll be able to have another go. A whole bunch of other ‘name’ pros will be able to join them: JP Kelly, Adam Levy, Alec Torelli and Eric Cajelais were also bounced.

Mike Watson’s elimination was what one could call a classic bust. He picked up pocket Ks during the 7th level and shoved all-in on them, only to find a caller in Roberto Romanello – another ex-WPT champ – who had pocket rockets. Vanessa Selbst’s elimination was less of a textbook one. She got her chips into the middle on an A,Jo and got a call from Matthias Kurtz, who had A,7o. The lesser hand prevailed eventually and Selbst bit the dust too.

Unlike the above said pros, Michael Eiler enjoyed a much more successful day. Not only did he manage to survive, he did so on a monster stack of 179.7k chips, second only to Breitfuss’ leading 185.5k. Mark Gork did well too. He closed the day with 170.5k chips, enough for third place on the provisional leader board. Marvin Rettenmaier finished the poker tournament in 4th.

Roberto Romanello, Bertrand Grospellier and Eugene Katchalov all managed to advance to day 2 too. Jonathan Duhamel made the cut too, albeit on a much shorter stack than the above said bunch.
