On Saturday morning, David “Chino” Rheem won the WPT’s World Championship event at the Bellagio, besting Erick Lindgren heads-up. Needless to say, the $25k buy-in made certain that the winner of the poker tournament would secure quite the bragging rights. On top of the prestigious title, Rheem also picked up a $1.15 million reward. He was the only one to finish in 7 figures. Second place man Lindgren “only” pocketed $650.2k. With his win, Rheem joined Carlos Mortensen, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Scott Seiver, David Williams and Marvin Rettenmaier as a WPT World Championship title-holder.
By the time the final table of the
poker tournament was reached, Rheem already held a respectable chip lead. As the home stretch of the event kicked off, Canada’s Jonathan Roy swung into action. He scored the first elimination of the final table by sending David Peters to the rail in 6th place. Peters picked up $173.9k for his efforts.
The next player to bite the dust was Brandon Steven. Roy was the one responsible for his demise too: Steven got his last chips into the middle with pocket 10s and he was called by Roy who had an Ah,4h for the coin-flip. The very first card to land on the board was an A though and Steven never managed to get anything going. He picked up $223.2k for his 5th place. Matt Hyman was the next victim of the final table. He was bounced by Roy too, after his pocket Ks fell to the latter’s pocket rockets.
Jonathan Roy’s stellar final table run came to an abrupt halt in 3rd place, David Rheem the one responsible for his exit. His third place finish – worth $421.8k – set up the heads-up stage of the event. The last hand of the event saw Rheem’s K,9o beat Lindgren’s Qd, 9d.
