WPT World Championship – Day 2 Report

Day 1 had already put 5 levels of action in the history books at the WPT World Championship, but players still had a chance to register for 3 more levels at the beginning of day 2. The extra time meant that the overall starting field grew to 220 – quite impressive considering that the buy-in cost 25 grand. With everything taken into account, the official prize-pool shot right past the $5.3 million mark, which means that the winner will take home more than $1.6 million.
Christian Harder had built the largest stack of chips on day 1. On day 2, it was Abe Mosseri’s turn to hit the limelight. Mosseri built a stack of 685k, to clinch the chip lead at the end of the day.
Mosseri kicked off his day in a rather aggressive fashion. He shoved all-in during the first level of play, with 10,9 on a flop of 8,9,10. Unfortunately for him, Kevin Saul made the call holding J,Q for the nut straight. The turn meant nothing for either player involved, but the 9 on the river gave Mosseri a boat, doubling him up. That pot vaulted Mosseri right into the lead and he would not relinquish his position all day long.
Saul got crippled by the hand and busted out a little later.
Alan Sternberg followed Mosseri on the provisional chip leader board with a stack of 606k chips. Sternberg played well all day, but the majority of his chips came from a hand he played against Shaun Deeb.
The money went all-in on the river of the said hand, on a board of 9,6,5,10,3. Sternberg was the one who pushed all-in with pocket 5s for a set, and Deeb made the call, but he mucked his hand after he saw what his opponent had.
Scotty Nguyen didn’t do nearly as good a Sternberg did. He was eliminated, together with Vivek Rajkumar, Justin Bonomo, Mike Matusow and Vanessa Rousso.
