WPT World Championship – Day 2 Report

On Sunday, the second day of the WPT’s World Championship event went into the books. Having coughed up a $25k buy-in, obviously none of the players involved were in a hurry to put their poker tournament lives onto the line, therefore the rate of eliminations never turned into anything more than a trickle. A total of 67 players survived the second day of action, with Mike Linster leading the way. Linster had a stack of 744k chips bagged. He was followed by Dan Shak, who finished with 617.3k chips to his name.
The top 10 remained an extremely star-studded lost: Antonio Esfandiari finished third with 536.1k chips. PokerStars pro Jake Cody, Rocco Palumbo and Will Failla also finished within the top 10.

The second day saw quite a few players take advantage of late registration: Dan O’Brien, Brian Rast and Brock Parker all bought in late, while Ben Lamb and Jeremy Ausmus decided to re-enter. Eventually, Chino Rheem, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Jason Mercier decided to enter the event as well.
Phil Ivey’s Day 2 run wasn’t a lucky one by any means. He registered during level 8 and shortly thereafter he was sent to the rail. Phil Hellmuth on the other hand got off to a good start and he kept up the pressure, finishing with 307k chips, enough for 17th place.
Linster started as one of the large stacks and he took advantage of his position. He finished the day having doubled his original stack. Many of his day 2 chips came at the end of a coin-flip, which saw his pocket 5s hold up against Allyn Jeffrey Shulman’s A,K.
He later took another key pot off David Sands to secure his end of the day chip lead.
