WPT World Championship Event – Day 4 Report

The 4th day of the WPT’s World Championship event saw the field whittle down to 15 over 5 levels of action. When the day was called, Galen Hall, a former PCA Champion, had the largest stack, weighing in at 3.4 million chips. His was the only one over the 3 million mark. Second place man Sam El Sayed, the previous day’s leader, has 2.7 million.
Day 4 was all about getting past the money bubble. A mere 27 places were paid in the event, which meant that out of the 52 players who returned to the tables, quite a few would have to leave empty handed for the others to cash.
The lineup had been an impressive one all tourney long, and things didn’t change much for Day 4, despite the continuous eliminations.
Many of the name players fell by the side on day 4 too, well short of the money. David Chiu and Yevgeniy Timoshenko were both among them, together with Justin Smith and Billy Baxter. Hafiz Khan must’ve seriously crossed Lady Luck at one point or another before the event, as he fell as the bubble boy: the last player to go home empty handed after having come literally within grasp of the dough.
The worst thing about it was that Khan didn’t bust on some desperate attempt to get something out of a measly starting hand. He got his chips into the middle on pocket rockets. Justin Young made the call with pocket Js and Khan looked like he was going to double up without any problems. A J which fell on the river, turned things around for good though, and Khan bit the dust.
As soon as the money bubble burst, the action sped up quite a bit. Players started dropping out left and right. Kenny Tran and Doyle Brunson both fell right after the bubble. Abe Mosseri and Christian Harder, two of the previous chip leaders, were both eliminated too.
