WSOP 2010 day 32 – Sigurd Eskeland strikes gold

Scott Montgomery was the story of the 32nd day of the
2010 WSOP. After securing his first bracelet in event #36, Montgomery looks well on his way to finishing on top of event #47, the $1,000 NL Holdem Special. There are currently 33 players left alive in the event and having won the last such NL Holdem Special, it’s safe to say Montgomery is definitely a favorite.
The chip leader is Manuel Davidian, but Adam White is hot on his tail. The short-stacks are Sean Urban and Jason Lower.
Event #48, the $2,500 Mixed Holdem Event was responsible for the only bracelet awarded on day 32. The winner of the bracelet was Sigurd Eskeland, a Norwegian teacher who – despite the fact that he’d cashed in WSOP events before – hadn’t yet tasted the thrill of victory.
Taking home the gold was by no means an easy task for Eskeland though. He faced players like Scott Seiver, Steve Sung and Matt Vengrin at the final table.
In the meantime, the Tournament of Champions continued with its day 2. The second day of action saw the field whittle down to 17, and while play was slow, it was by no means boring. The champs showed us mere mortals why they could play in such an event and why others couldn’t. An example of high level poker prowess was provided by Johnny Chan who folded pocket Qs on a board of A,A,Q,J,J when faced with post-river aggression from Scotty Nguyen.
Mike Matusow will start Day 3 of the event behind the largest stack. The going will be tough for Bertrand Grospellier, Barry Greenstein and Antonio Esfandiari, who are all stuck with short-stacks.
Event #49, the $1,500
NL Holdem one, kicked off on day 32. Right after its start, the action switched into high gear, bouncing more than 4 players every minute. Shannon Shorr managed to build a nice stack early on, thanks to a quad he caught, but his luck deserted him afterwards and he started bleeding chips. He took a bad beat eventually to head to the rail with nothing but a wooden spoon to show for his efforts.
315 players will be back for the second day of the
poker tournament.
Event #50 got rolling on day 32 too. Kevin Schafel proved to be the dominant force in this one, sending fellow large-stack Scotty Nguyen to the rail in the latter part of the day to secure a truly massive chip lead. 172 players will be back for some more $5,000 PLO action on day 2.
