WSOP 2010 Main Event – day 1C in the books

Day 1C of the 2010 WSOP Big Dance attracted more players than day 1a and Day 1b had before, confirming the trend that as far as WSOP tournaments are concerned, the tough only get going when the doors are almost slammed close. Mathieu Sauriol finished the third day 1 flight of the Main Event with the largest stack of chips, marking yet another relatively unknown presence at the top of the chip counts. Saving face for the “name” community was Johnny Chan though, who finished hot on Sauriol’s heels.
More than 1,600 players survived this day of action, giving Chan the opportunity to amass a 163,700 chip stack.
Chan didn’t really make any significant waves at the WSOP so far, but his Day 1C explosion may yet be the sign of more serious things to come from the multiple Main Event Champ. His rise to the top was due to a flush he managed to hit on the river, holding Kd,8d in a hand in which an opponent had hit a set of 7s.
PokerStars’ Lex Veldhuis was the story of the day though. The Team PokerStars pro had a pretty rough ride early on, and at one point in the poker tournament, he looked like he was going to be bounced. He bounced back instead of letting go though and after a few lucky hands, he was right back in the books with a 40k chip stack. By the end of the day, he’d managed to increase the size of his stack to almost 100k.
Team PokerStars will continue to be represented on day 2 by Daniel Negreanu and Joe Cada too. Patrick Antonius survived as well.
Chau Giang, Jeff Madsen and Huck Seed were not that lucky though.
