WSOP 2012 – Day 43 Report

Day 43 of the 2012 WSOP saw the second Day 1 flight of the $10k Main Event kick off. The number of registrants far surpassed that of day 1A: a total of 2,144 players put up the $10k buy-in, looking to make it to day 2 of the poker tournament. Needless to say, the starting field was studded with ‘name’ pros. Some of these guys – like Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst and Jason Somerville - did well and finished with decent stacks. Others – like Tom Dwan, Greg Raymer, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Joe Sebok – busted out early.

Dwan showed up fashionably late, but that didn’t bring him any luck: he failed to get anything going, and by the time he was forced to commit, he only had about 7k chips left. His last chips went into the middle on a flop of Qc,Jd,6d. James Calderero and another player made the call to see an A fall on the turn. Calderero shoved all-in too, prompting the other player to get out of the way. Calderero then tabled a Qs, Js for a two pair, while Dwan had a 10,9o for the straight draw. The river-card was the 4s and Dwan’s tournament life came to an abrupt and untimely end.
Not all the ‘name’ crowd suffered though. Some of them, like Somerville, Shaun Deeb and Brian Hastings thrived. Deeb finished the day with 125,900 chips, while Hastings had 119k. Sam Farha, Eugene Katchalov, Dan Harrington, Robert Varkonyi, Justin Bonomo, Jerry Yang and Barry Greenstein all made it past the hurdle on decent stacks.

Vanessa Selbst had an impressive run on Day 1B: she amassed a stack of 169.3k chips. Another player who did extremely well was Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu finished the day with a stack of 140k+ chips. Bernard Lee played well on day 1B too, but he failed to break the 100k chip mark.
The third and final day 1 flight of the Main Event is expected to yield the largest starting field.
