The event which has undoubtedly generated the most buzz at the
2013 WSOP thus far was event #6, a $1.5k
NL Holdem affair, dubbed the “Millionaire Maker”. The tournament kicked off on Saturday, drawing a starting field of 6,343 players, thus setting a new record for non-Main Event WSOP tournaments.
It played down to a winner about 6 hours ago, when Benny Chen picked up the $1,198,780 top prize, together with a gold bracelet. 10 players returned to the tables on the final day of the event, and Chen was the one holding the largest stack at the commencement of the hostilities. Dan Kelly was however the highest-profile player at the table, with the eyes of the press all over him. Kelly didn’t disappoint: he was the one who scored the first two eliminations of the day, sending Joe Kuether and Theron Eichenberger to the rail in 10th and 9th places respectively. Everyone at the final table was guaranteed a 6-figure prize. Eichenberger, the 9th place man, walked away with $105.1k. For a while there, Kelly managed to take the lead from Chen who took a dip in the chip counts: after Robert McWeigh was bounced in 8th, he suddenly found himself 6th in chips.
He mounted a spectacular comeback though and by the time Upeshka Desilva was bounced in 7th, he was back in second place.
Chris Hunichen was eliminated next, followed to the rail by none other than Dan Kelly. With 4 players remaining, Chen finally swung into action: he busted Justin Liberto in 4th place and then disposed of Jonathan Grey in 3rd. That left him heads-up with Michael Bennington. The last hand of the
poker tournament saw Bennington’s pocket 3s bested by Chen’s pocket 9s on an irrelevant board.
