The first event of the WSOP APAC is in the books and the first
WSOP bracelet ever awarded Down Under has found its proud owner: the $1.1k
NL Holdem accumulator event, which proved to be extremely popular, wound down on Monday, with the victory of Bryan Piccioli. Piccioli pocketed the AUD$211.5k top prize, in addition to the priceless jewelry of course, the exact value of which can hardly be estimated.
Piccioli’s achievement was by no means a walk in the park though. The final table he had to best on his way to the title was a rather impressive one. In fact, the player he defeated heads-up over the home stretch was none other than renowned Aussie pro Jonathan Karamalikis. Karamalikis picked up AUD$130.7k for his efforts. Jonathan Duhamel was in the top 4 as well: his 4th place was worth AUD$71.8k. Other notables who made deep runs in the opening event of the WSOP APAC were Jeremy Ausmus and Graeme Putt.
The start of the day was crunch-time for the short-stacks as usual: Ryan Otto was the first player to bite the dust. He picked up AUS$20.1k for his 9th place finish. Otto was followed to the rail by fellow short-stack Peter Kleugden. Kleugden’s share of the prize-pool was $25.3k. Iori Yogo was the next victim of the final table attrition. Despite having reached his 3rd final table this year, he failed to secure the win yet again, fading away in 7th place and collecting a little over AUD$32k for his efforts.
The heads-up stage of the
poker tournament was set after 2 hours of 30-handed action. Eventually Jay Loo was disposed of by Karamalikis and the final dash for the bracelet was reached.
The final hand of the event saw Karamalikis’ pocket 10s fall to Piccioli’s A,8o.
