WSOP APAC Event #1 – Day 1 Report

The first event of the inaugural edition of the WSOP APAC kicked off the other day. The $1.1k NL Holdem Accumulator saw a starting field of 329 players belly up to its tables on the first of the planned three day 1 flights. 47 players were left standing at the end of the day. Dan Kelly finished with the largest stack. He had 66.2k chips bagged, only marginally more than second-place man Alex Givotovsky.
Most of Kelly’s chips ended up in his possession towards the end of the day, when he picked up a massive pot, sending two players to the rail in the process.
The player who kick-started the action in the said hand was an unknown guy. He shoved all-in and Kelly, who had position in the hand, elected to flat-call. Didier Guerin though, who was sitting in the big blind, didn’t want to settle for that much: he three-bet, in response to which Kelly pushed all his chips into the middle. Guerin made the call and he tabled an Ah, Qh against Kelly’s pocket Ks. The third player involved in the hand had pocket 10s. The flop gave Kelly a set and he never looked back. The unknown player was bounced and Guerin, his stack in shambles, followed him to the rail a few hands later.

Antonio Esfandiari may have been one of the biggest names at the felt, but he too failed to advance to day 2. He was sent to the rail, together with Bertrand Grospellier and Australian player Jackie Glazier. Phil Hellmuth, on the hunt for his 14th WSOP bracelet, survived though, going into Day 2 with 20.6k chips in his bag. Mike Watson survived as well, together with Andrew Hinrichsen, who finished on a rather short stack.
