WSOP APAC Event #3 – Day 1 Report

As the first ever WSOP event hosted in Australia gathers momentum, more and more people get involved the bracelet-awarding events. Phil Ivey may have been booted from event #2, but he returned to action in event #3, the AUD$2.2k Mixed Event. The poker tournament drew a starting field of 81 players, who combined buy-ins to create an AUD$162.2k prize-pool.
At the end of the first day of the action, Brandon Wong emerged with the largest stack: he had 42.9k chips bagged. He was followed by Robert Campbell, who had built a stack of 33.3k chips. PokerStars pro Bertrand Grospellier was the highest finishing notable: his 31.1k chips thrust him into 4th place at the end of the day. Phil Ivey didn’t just survive the day: he finished among the large stacks. His 21.4k chips were enough for 7th place.
Barry Greenstein made the top 10 as well: he finished 9th with 18.3k chips to his name.

Interestingly, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey were seated at the same table at the beginning of the day, so needless to say, their table drew quite a few railbirds. To round out the selection, Mel Judah also joined them at the table. Also interestingly, every one of the above said pros managed to advance to day 2. Negreanu finished on a healthy stack of 16.7k chips too, while Hellmuth finished as one of the short-stacks with 5.6k chips to his name.
Dan Kelly was among the survivors as well, together with Eugene Katchalov and Jonathan Duhamel. Local boy Joe Hachem on the other hand was bounced. He was followed to the rail by JC Tran, Joseph Cheong and Stephen Chidwick. Leo Boxell failed to advance as well.
32 players remained in contention at the end of the day.
