While it was the only
WSOP APAC event not to offer a bracelet to its winner, the $50k High Roller was extremely popular with the railbirds in the Crown Casino thanks to the sheer amount of money one had to cough up in order to take part in it. Those actually willing to put their money onto the line were a lot fewer obviously: only 5 players showed up in the beginning, but 32 more joined before the end of registration, and several decided to take advantage of the re-buy option too. In the end, a total of 44 buy-ins went into the prize-pool, generating an AUD$ 2.15 million pool, which guaranteed the winner an AUD$825k cut. Only 6 players will be paid by the High Roller, with min-cash having been set to AUD$115k.
Joseph Cheong finished the first day of the event with the largest stack: he had 1.5 million chips bagged at the end of the green felt hostilities. Jonathan Duhamel made the final stretch of the tournament as well: he finished with 604k chips, a stack large-enough for 5th place.
He was followed by Phillip Gruissem in 6th, who had 530k chips bagged. Joe Hachem and Marvin Rettenmaier made the top 10 as well. Hachem finished 8th with 371k chips to his name, while Rettenmaier ended up 9th, with 354k.
Most of Cheong’s chips came towards the end of the day when he managed to take down a huge pot from Dan Shak. In the said hand, the two players moved their stacks into the middle before the flop. Shak had an Ac, Qc against Cheong’s pocket Ks. Nothing fell on the board to help Shak and the pot was Cheong’s. A tad later, Cheong actually bounced Sam Trickett to add some more chips to his stack.
