WSOP-C Hammond – Day 1 report

The revamped WSOP-C is breaking attendance records with every new event held. Event #1 of the third stop of the series (the Hammond, Indiana one) saw an unprecedented starting field of 1,611 players belly up to the tables. In the wake of such success, the Main Event couldn’t fall far behind either. The organizers were cautiously optimistic about the expected player turn-up, predicting about 600-700 players to cough up the $1,500 buy-in for the Main Event.
When registration closed though, no fewer than 872 players had paid out the buy-in, steamrolling the previous
WSOP-C Main Event record of 538.
Jim Kasputis was the one who managed to clinch the chip lead after the first 16 levels of action. He built a stack of 360k chips.
Despite the smaller than usual buy-in, several “name” pros took part in the
poker tournament. Allen Bari not only took part, he flirted with the chip lead all day long. He eventually finished with a more than healthy stack. Other “name” players who now look forward to a comfortable day 2, were Adam Levy and David Baker. Matt Brady and Bryan Devonshire survived the day too, albeit on smaller stacks.
When day 1 was called, only 162 of the initial starting field were still standing. Faraz Jaka bolted out of the gates to settle into the early chip lead, but a few levels later he was nowhere to be seen at the tables. Matt Stout, Tom Marchese and Dan O’Brien were among those eliminated too.
Jason Mercier played too, but he was eliminated on day 1 as well, together with Eddy Sabat, Jason DeWitt, Kyle Bowker and Jonathan Aguiar.
On day 2, survivors are scheduled to play full one-hour levels instead of the 40 minute ones played on day 1.
