WSOP-C Hammond Main Event – Day 1A

Day 1A of the
WSOP Circuit’s Hammond Main Event saw a starting field of 912 players belly up to the tables. The turn-out was quite impressive, especially so in light of the fact that last year’s Main Event attracted a total of 872 players. The $1,600 buy-in is obviously one perfectly sized for the financial means of those interested in taking part in these events.
15 levels of play were squeezed into the first Day 1 flight, at the end of which Paul Bianchi emerged with the chip lead. He accumulated 358.5k chips, most of which landed in his possession rather late in the day.
Tom Luce finished with the second biggest stack, followed by Eric Cain in 3rd place.
The start of the day field included quite a few name players, and some of these guys managed to survive to day 2. Mohsin Charania, Dwyte Pilgrim, Chad Brown and Kenny Nguyen all made the cut on more or less healthy stacks.
Allen Kessler, Kathy Liebert and Faraz Jaka were also in the starting field. They all failed to make it past the day 1A hurdle though.
There were quite a few interesting hands through the day, but none of them was as interesting as the one that unfolded between Voytek Glab and Pavlin Karakikov. Karakikov posted a bet from early position and as players folded behind him one after the other, he exposed a pair of Js. Unfortunately for him, Voytek Glab decided to defend his BB and made the call. The flop fell K,Q,4 and Glab fired out a bet which was called by Karakikov. An A fell on the turn and Glab went all-in. Karakikov thought about it for a while but eventually he made the call. Glab shoved pocket 5s and things looked to be headed in the right direction for Karakikov, but then a 5 fell on the river and the pot was shipped Glab’s way.
To add insult to injury, the organizers slapped Karakikov with a one orbit penalty for having exposed his hand.
