WSOP-C River Rock – Day 1A Report

Although seemingly insignificant in comparison to its bigger brother, the WSOP-C is a living, breathing and evolving entity too, where many a poker pro disillusioned with the
online poker scene or the mainstream circuit, has found success. This week, a new
WSOP-C stop kicked off, one with potentially historic significance: the first ever Canadian WSOP-C event.
The River Rock Casino played host to the first Day 1 flight of the above said tournament. Day 1A drew a starting field of 294 players, who managed to play down to 59 at the end of a day of green felt battles.
Norman Overdijk was the player who managed to finish with the biggest stack. He built a stack of 242k chips. John Cracic had an excellent day as well: he finished with 231k chips to his name. Sean Hwang rounded out the top three, having had 207.7k chips bagged.
While the frontrunners were mostly players the mainstream public has heard/seen little of, there were quite a few “name” pros in the Day 1A field too. Jason Koon was one of them. As a matter of fact, he was the one responsible for Hwang’s rise to the top of the chip counts: he dropped a huge pot to the latter, after Hwang managed to make a nasty backdoor straight against his gutshot draw.
Ashkan Razavi played as well and he managed to finish the day with a healthy stack of 155.4k chips too.
Paul Nguyen finished with a relatively decent stack of 111.2k chips as well.
Kevin MacPhee and Matt Affleck were at the tables at the beginning of the day too, but they failed to make the cut. Scott Clements and Amit Makhija were eliminated as well.
