WSOP.com’s Slow, Steady Approach

WSOP.com has been launched about 2 weeks ago as only the second fully regulated and legally operating real money online poker site in Nevada. A lot of things can be said about the operation, which functions under the WSOP brand and as such, probably has quite a bright future to look forward to, but not that it has been put together in haste. In fact, the officials and the technical personnel behind the site worked for months on end making sure that everything clicks and the launch date got pushed back several times too. Even though there was a great deal of media buzz surrounding the launch, it all turned out a bit lackluster: there were no raging crowds assaulting the servers, as a matter of fact, the player liquidity raised by the site upon its launch was rather unimpressive and that is not in comparison to industry leaders like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, but rather, in comparison to Ultimate Poker, the other fully regulated Nevada-based online poker operation.

What exactly do those traffic numbers tell us though? Since its official September 19 launch, the average peak traffic at WSOP.com was 133 players. Of course, the average has been somewhat skewed by the numbers posted by the first three days following the launch, during which, there were geo-location issues upon player sign-up, issues which have since been successfully addressed. Not taking those three days into account, the above said average peak traffic is still a rather mellow 144, well below the 296 posted by Ultimate Poker during the same time-frame. One does have to consider though that Ultimate Poker had a 5-month head start and that apparently does indeed amount to something.

The problem for both operators is not the competition however. That is only likely to intensify in the coming months/years. What could in fact undo them is the limited nature of the intra-state market, even if we’re talking about Nevada here…
PokerStars are the biggest online poker operation on the planet. Join the site today and take advantage of the unparalleled player liquidity.
