WSOP Main Event – Day 1B

Day 1B of the 2009 WSOP Main Event featured a smaller field at 873 than Day 1A, but it was an equally colorful field. Greg Raymer, Chris Moneymaker, Amarillo Slim and Doyle Brunson represented the pros, joined by Chris Ferguson and Carlos Mortensen.
Sports starts were represented by boxer Winky Wright, but there were plenty of other notable entries as well. Almost the whole Brunson family was present as Doyle was joined by son Todd and daughter Pam. Jack Ury broke the record for the oldest ever WSOP Main Event entrant at 96. Joe Sebok, Barry Greenstein, Grant Levy, Hoyt Corkins and Alex Krevchenko were also in the field.
The 2003 Main Event champ, Chris Moneymaker failed to get things going on Day 1B. His last chips went in on a pair of 10s he’d picked up, but he was promptly called by a payer with A,A and he failed to improve with the board. Winky Wright met a similar fate early in the day, and so did David Steicke who won’t play on Day 2 either.
Jeremiah Smith had it going pretty well early on, as he even managed to double up on one occasion when his pocket rockets prevailed over an opponent’s pocket Ks. He started bleeding away his chips though, and soon found himself all-in again. This time, he shoved all-in on the turn of a board made up of: A,9,3,7, holding 3,3 for the flopped set. He got called by Jim Bookstaff who had pocket rockets for a set of As. A 9 fell on the river which gave both players a boat, but Smith was done.
He was followed to the rail by Victoria Coren, David Pham and Doyle Brunson. Doyle shoved all-in with pocket 3s on a board of 9,7,3 and was called by a player with 6,5. The turn fell a 4, filling his opponent’s straight and Doyle too was eliminated.
Pascal Perrault was another player to exit relatively early on a bad beat. His pocket rockets were cracked and he headed to the rail, tail between legs too.
Dustin Woolf was another victim of a bad beat. He held on nicely till near the end of the day, when he called an all-in move by the SB. Both players tabled A,K and the split looked fairly certain.
Woolf’s opponent held the Ad though and the flop fell a dangerous looking K,9,8 all diamond giving him a nut flush draw. Sure enough, the turn brought another diamond and Woolf was eliminated.
Brandon Demes was the one who clinched the chip lead at the end of the day, having amassed 137,075 chips. Jim Bookstaff and Jesse Rios also did pretty well. Shaun Deeb, Sam Khouiss, Alex Kravchenko and Greg Raymer also survived Day 1B. Other big names who will return to fight it out on day 2 were: Juha Helppi, Amarillo Slim, Luca Pagano and Jerrod Ankenman.
