WSOP Main Event – Day 6: Phil Ivey “rears his head”

The action on days 4 and 5 of the 2009 WSOP’s Main Event had been cut short by the level-target set by the organizers. The 185 players who returned to the green felt on day 6 though could literally knock themselves out as play continued till only 64 of them were left standing.
Darvin Moon had the chip lead at the end of the day, but all eyes were on Phil Ivey who had managed to climb up all the way to third place on the provisional leader board, looking more menacing than ever.
Joe Hachem and Peter Eastgate, two former champions of the Main Event were both bounced on day 6. Moon’s spectacular progress was sparked by a hand in which he managed to crack the pocket Ks that David Benyamine threw at him. That proved to be the point of ignition for him and he didn’t stop till he reached the top. Ludovic Lacay, one of the large stacks at the beginning of the day, held on to his status and finished day 6 behind some pretty impressive mountains of chips. Antonio Esfandiari and Jeff Schulman managed to hang on as well.

Michael Greco was one of the early eliminations of the day. He shoved all-in on his A,K and got called by Scott Bohlman’s pocket rockets. The flop did give Greco another K, but he still fell short and was done after the river.
Nasr El Nasr and Joe Sebok were also bounced soon after.

Betrand Grospellier failed to keep up with his fellow countryman Ludovic Lacay. Despite the fact that he had had the chip lead at the end of one of the previous Main Event days, Grospellier was sent to the rail too on day 6.
He got involved in a big hand with Scott Cook and Fernando Gordo. Most of his chips went into that pot and as Cook hit a boat on the flop, he suddenly found himself a short-stack. He committed the last of his chips on an A,K he’d picked up and ran it right into Scott Sitron’s pocket Ks. The board ran Ace-less and Grospellier was done.

The big hand between David Benyamine and Darvin Moon, which saw the latter’s rise to chip-lead begin, featured a flop of 9s,3h,7d. A 4h fell on the turn and all the money went in. Benyamine tabled pocket rockets against Moon’s pocket 3s which had made a set on the flop. The Qc on the river meant that Benyamine was out.
Joe Hachem fell victim to Billy Kopp when his Jc, 9c failed to improve against Kopp’s pocket 4s.
Eastgate was eliminated by Kopp near the end of the day. Eastgate’s A,J hit two pairs on the board, but Kopp’s 8,8 caught a flush on the river to send him packing.

Joe Sebok woke up with a short-stack after dinner break, but he fought back valiantly doubling up a few times. He eventually finished with exactly 1 million chips Ivey had an excellent day as he eliminated several players on his way to a 6,345,000 stack, enough for 3rd place.
Darvin Moon was the leader with 9,745,000, followed by Billy Kopp, with 8,245,000.
