The 9th day of the 2012 WSOPE kicked off with the final table of event #6, the €1,650 Six-handed PLO event. Only five players returned to the tables, among them Andrew Lichtenberger and Aku Joentausta. Andrew Lichtenberger started the day with the largest stack, but his reign at the top of the chip counts was short-lived. He locked horns with short stack Petteri Kalenius in one of the early hands and doubled him up, leaving himself crippled in the process.
Lichtenberger thus became the first victim of the day, taking down €18.4k for his efforts.
It didn’t take long after his elimination for the trickle to turn into a flow: Kalenius was bounced as well, pocketing €25,8k for his efforts.
One of the turning points of the final table came when Francisco Da Costa Santos managed to deliver a hug blow to Joentausta, in a hand which left the latter pretty much crippled as the former danced around the table with joy. Needless to say, the hand provided a huge boost to Santos’ stack, who never looked back from that point on.
Left with few chips in front of him, Joentausta was forced to commit, and he did, while holding Ac,10c,9h,8c. Santos was quick to call him with K,Q,9,4 and he proceeded to hit a straight to score the knockout and to add some more chips to his stack. With that, the
poker tournament was down to its heads-up stage. When the home dash began, Santos had a massive edge over Marquez: 742k chips to Marquez’s 187k. With such an obvious lack of balance, a swift conclusion was quite inevitable. It took the two players about 13 minutes to get all their chips into the middle in what would turn out to be the last hand of the event. Santos made a straight to send his opponent packing and to pick up the first ever Portuguese WSOPE bracelet, together with the €83.2k top prize. The runner-up was rewarded with €51.4k.
